Oasis Academy baseball and softball teams clinched the No. 3 seed in next week’s Northern 2A regional tournament.

Softball swept last week’s series against West Wendover at the East Richards field, and it finishes the season at Silver Stage on Thursday. Oasis Academy won Friday’s game, 11-1, before defeating the Wolverines, 13-11 and 1-0, on Saturday.

Kirsten Detomasi struck out 13 in Friday’s win as the bats didn’t come alive until the third inning after miscues on the basepaths.

In a seven-run third inning, Emma Lewis tied the game with a bunt single to score Dahlila Creer before Mackenzie Bryant broke the tie, scoring on a passed ball. Lewis stole home during the next at-bat and Kaylin Guthrie singled in Detomasi to give the Bighorns a 5-1 lead with no outs. With the bases loaded, Creer was hit by the pitch to score one run and Guthrie scored on another passed ball.

Eneyde Rios hit an inside-the-park home run to end the game in the sixth inning.

Four lead changes in the last two innings of Saturday’s first game saw the Bighorns walk it off with a three-run eighth inning.

The first three batters reached base before Bryant grounded into a fielder’s choice. Lewis, though, doubled on the third pitch to clear the bases and give the Bighorns a two-run win.

After West Wendover took the lead in the seventh, 10-9, Phynex Hunt doubled on a line drive to left field with two outs, scoring Lewis to tie the game.

Detomasi pitched all eight innings, allowing only three earned runs while striking out 14.

A pitching duel highlighted the series finale as Taylynn Maynez picked up the win, striking out two and allowing four hits in four innings. Detomasi pitched the final three innings.

In a scoreless tie in the sixth inning, Guthrie led off with a single and then stole second and third during Rios’ at-bat. With two outs and Caidance McCart at the plate, Guthrie stole home on the second pitch to break the tie.

BASEBALL SWEPT IN HOME FINALE

With first place on the line and needing a sweep to win the league title, Oasis Academy’s baseball team fell short against West Wendover.

The Elko County school swept the Bighorns, 14-2 on Friday and 16-10 and 4-0 on Saturday, at the county regional park. Oasis Academy dropped to third and will be the No. 3 seed for next week’s regional tournament with one game left in the season, a road contest this week in Silver Springs.

After tying Friday’s game at one in the third inning, Oasis couldn’t stop West Wendover in the following inning as the Wolverines scored nine runs. They added four more in the fifth to end the game by the mercy rule.

Ryder McNabb led the team with a pair of hits and an RBI while James Thibodaux, Zachary Budner, Josh Gusewelle and Kayden White each singled.

McNabb, Budner and Matthew Bird pitched.

Oasis jumped on the visitors in Saturday’s first game, scoring eight runs in the first inning but West Wendover scored 11 unanswered between the second and fourth innings.

Thibodaux drove in three on three hits to lead the Bighorns, and Budner, Gusewelle, McNabb and Fenn Mackedon each had two hits. AlexZander Sheldon-Davis had one hit and an RBI, while Budner also drove in one.

Budner, Bird, Mackedon and Kayden White each shared duties on the hill with Bird going the furthest at 2.2 innings.

A three-run first inning was all the scoring West Wendover needed in the finale.

Five Bighorns recorded two hits but the team couldn’t bring any runners home in the shutout loss. Trevor Barrenchea, Budner, Mackedon, McNabb and White each had two hits. Budner and Mackedon also doubled.

McNabb went the distance on the hill, giving up two earned runs and striking out three.
